Innovation Hour

Today we had a huge struggle of not being able to talk to Mr. Gault because he wasn't available. Then, we made a presentation to show at the Spirit Assembly on Friday. This is starting to frustrate me because I don't want to talk in front of a lot of people, but it's for a good cause. We really need to get information forms to the entire school by tomorrow.
Today we were researching what foundation or charity we would like to do along with donating the LJH sports. We finished our form to send out to students. Then we went down to Mr. Gault's office and he was unavailable. Jackson, Sadie, and I are going to go down there later to see if we can send these forms out.

Today Sadie and I joined Jackson to sell Conference T-shirts for our football team. I liked how we discussed what our opportunities were and it seemed very serious. I learned that putting a lot of designs on a shirt raises the cost significantly. I'm wondering if there is a chance we could could continue a project after we finish our project these few months. I noticed that Jackson is very focused and knows what he wants to do while Sadie is creative and likes to give ideas. It's very fun to work with my friends and get their ideas together to make something awesome. I'm wondering what it will take to sell these t-shirts and how many we will sell. It would be great if we sold a lot and made a good profit so we can donate the money.

Reflective Essay

In genius hour we spent our Mondays either making websites, researching, making posters anything we wanted to do that will help us learn. My genius hour,”Movie Reviews for You”, is where I can watch movies and share my opinions (because I am very opinionated) with others. I really enjoy watching movies and I do a lot of movie watching in my free time so I said why not change my genius hour from one that was boring and I found zero interest in and it wasn’t making any progress to one I actually enjoy. The link to my website is .

I initially wanted to just be done with genius hour because I didn’t understand the point of it. That is also when I had an awful idea for the project. Now I want to accomplish many things like making people happy,  watch more movies and I have a better reason to do it, and I want to see this project going beyond me just using the one day a week to do this and more like a few times or many times a week I work on it. My vision for this project is for it to be a resources people use to find nice reviews that are helpful.

I liked how we used this time to learn of our own standards, it gets boring having to do what teachers want us to do and learn what they need us to learn so the genius hour was a great way to express our own feelings and interests. I noticed myself wanting attention for my genius hour by other people not in just this school or in my community but from others all over the world. I can give them my opinion on everything I enjoyed or disliked about the movie and who I would recommend the movie for. I don’t spoil any parts of the movie with my reviews, so that’s what I think makes me a good critic.

I wonder if my website got so big and if people everywhere used it to find movie reviews. That would just be the most exceptional place for my website to be at. I want to carry on this genius hour until it gets to that point. What if it doesn’t? I will work even harder, tweet more everyday, and I won’t stop until I’m there. This genius hour really makes me want to keep trying and it is really starting to help me form a trait for my life and that is determination.

How might of my project of turned out if I didn’t switch projects? I think that I would still be unsatisfied by my accomplishments because I felt like no one knew I was even there and I was ready to help. I really wanted my “Teaching Teacher’s Fun” to work out because I would of enjoyed to help teachers. I did come across that I had a degree but I didn’t. I was there to help but no one came, so I already feel more successful and more accomplished with my project on writing reviews for movies.

I learned more about making websites and how to attract more viewers. Social media has really helped this world out because without we wouldn’t have many show ups to events. For example: get togethers at libraries, art shows, and conventions. I used social media to get more viewers on my website and get ideas on movies to review. I also learned that if you’re unsatisfied with something you need to find help or do something to help yourself.  I made a decision with the help with Mrs. Neidlinger that I needed to find something else to do and I’m very appreciative about that because I was feeling very worried about the outcome.

Is it possible to find a way to attract more audience? I’m wondering this because I really do want my project to keep going on for awhile and it really gives me something to do because I enjoy movies and there is no better way to show your opinion other than sharing it with others on a review website! What would it take to get there? I think it would take a lot of tweeting and “social mediaing” because that’s how I feel the word gets around.

What could happen if too many request come in? I could have my friends help with the orders and they would be happy to help because I would give them credit. Does it matter that I only do my genius hour once a week? Yes, because if I didn’t do it more often then I would be behind and I wouldn’t be able to be as successful with it as I would like to. To get what you want you have to work hard at it and if you don’t do anything your project or dream will die.

How is my project like other movie review blogs/websites? I give the viewers a summary of the movie, a rating of stars, who I recommend it to,  my opinion, and a trailer. Is it right to copy someone elses summary? Yes if you give the credit. I get my summaries from IMDb because they give very good summaries that I wouldn’t be able to do because sometime I spoil movies for people but I don’t when I give my opinions about the movie.

My finish project has changed so much from the start. For one, the entire project changed! I originally had the idea that giving my opinions and thoughts to teachers was a good idea to improve their teaching. Well it wasn’t, it honestly didn’t turn out to well I came across like I actually knew what I was doing and I have a degree in teaching, which I don’t. My final product, which definitely isn’t final, is a website created for people who want reviews for movie and the reviews include: a summary of the movie, a rating of stars, who I recommend it to,  my opinion, and a trailer.

I think I accomplished many things. I made a website, twitter, email, and I even accomplished the genius hour. I accomplished the genius hour because I feel accomplished myself. I still don’t feel accomplished because I want this to go on until I am older. My project will impact others because it is a new resources for others to get reviews from an honest person with an optimistic, but real, point of view.

Is my favorite thing to do the reason for my genius hour? Yes it is. I think this should be the reason for everyone’s genius hour project because it’s a way to really put yourself into the project and get a good outcome. If you put yourself into it then you're more than likely to be proud of your work and be happy with it. I learned this when I saw my first project failing and I dreaded genius hour because it wasn’t really something I was into. I think this applies to almost anything you do in life; Do what interests you to make the most out of living.

I have been starting to tweet out more and I have been, surprisingly, getting a lot more attention! In just 10 minutes after my first tweet I had 11 new view!(Doesn't sound very exciting, I know) I am starting to rely on twitter more for a lot of my information, these accounts put links on their tweets to very useful and helpful sites. I found a few articles today that are very helpful like one about bringing humor into the classroom. I really liked that one because it sounded like something I would enjoy.
So my website isn't doing so well... The most view I have had at a time is 18! Thats not very impressive comparing it to this one, oh well. Today I found a website to debate on different topics. If you are like me you would have a very good time doing this, I tried it out on some (it was fun!) I found one on year-round school that left me mad for the rest of the period though... DEBATE WEBSITE
Today I made a twitter and a gmail! Awesome, I know right. So Mrs. Holland didn't come today so I just decided to suck it up and just do the project, it's not going to kill me. I also found some new websites and twitter accounts that are very helpful. During this period I also gained 14 visitors on my site, it doesn't sound very impressive but it is when lately you have only been getting 0-3 visitors a week.
Today Mrs. Holland came in and some other students got to share about their projects, "lucky" us we didn't. I really wish I could of because I really don't like my project because it's not a very great topic and it's really not what I am interested in. But today I got A LOT of new videos and articles on.
Today I feel like I got a lot done! I have put new information on my blog like Youtube videos, links, and a few crosswords. I hope people come visit my site, because I am pretty sure I am the only one visiting it, oh well. The link is right here. When thinking about next week I am maybe going to create a twitter or another social media website, but I'm not sure yet.
Today I updated my website some more, I have all the planning done and I have all the gadgets I want. I found some websites and I put those on my tab. I found this blogger on blog spot who is a very creative teacher. She has some awesome ideas and cool ways of teaching. I feel like I made progress today and I know what I am really looking for. Genius Hour is still my one of my least favorite things to do but I think that is because I didn't choose a very good thing to do for it.

During this genius hour I learned new ways to teach kids fractions. I also uploaded that to my site and I also uploaded a blog where the author has thought of 101 ways for a teacher to be more creative and I agree with all of what he has listed. TEACHING TEACHERS FUN

During the two Mondays we have had to start our genius hour, I have made some progress. I have created a website, looked up information, and tweaked my website again. It is not the most interesting thing to do in class but oh well. But it is nice to be able to use our creative minds to make something that maybe we have been thinking about doing but just never had the time to do outside of school or in school. It is a little hard trying to find new and more things to learn each time but I think it will get easier over time.

NAME: Kate Renneker

Title: Teaching Teachers Fun

How will your project impact people as well as yourself?
My project will impact people by putting the attendance rates up, kids will want to go to school, and teachers will feel more appreciated
Why is your project AWESOME?
My project is awesome because it can help everyone in the school and it will help others.
Which of your genius’ will you be using?
My genius I will be using is, being creative and imaginative

Think up a descriptive title. Try to be creative if it fits.
Teaching the Teachers Fun
What challenge/goal/question will drive your work?
The goal that will drive my work is having more students enjoy school instead of skipping and disliking teachers and school.

What do you expect to learn? How will you be challenged? How will this stretch you?
I expect to learn some new ways of teaching and ways of using my imagination. I will be challenged by trying to think of new creative games or ways or teaching and influencing other teachers to use it.

List your materials/resources and who will be providing them.
For my 20% time all I will be using is the internet. I will make a website, look up some new ways of teaching, create games, etc.

Main Steps:
Outline the main steps to complete your project. Explain any additional steps you need to complete. How will you document your process/progress beyond your journal entries?
1. Make a website (so I can post games and ways of learning)
2. Make a twitter (so I can tweet out websites)
3. Look up information online
4. Make games or lesson plans
5. Try to influence teachers to use these.

How long do you expect this project to take?
I think this project will keep going, but to get started I’d say 3 20% times.

List possible resources/sources of inspiration to complete this project. Are there any outside experts who you could learn from or who might help you? Are there existing examples of the sort of project you want to complete?

What parts of this project might be difficult? How do you expect to handle them?
The parts that will most likely be difficult will be trying to help other teachers and get the word out.
Sharing/Teaching/Paying It Forward - How will you share what you have learned with others?
I will share it through a website and twitter.

Who is your target audience?
How will you define the projects success? How should we evaluate your success? How will that
be "visible" to others? (Demonstrate) Can your progress be measured throughout the project?
I will define the projects success, and so should you, through the number of teachers using the new ideas and games I have made.

                                   GOOGLE'S 20% Time

Google has a day a week, 4 days a month, 48 times a year where they can have time to themselves to work on separate projects. For example you know Gmail or the google glasses? Both of thos products were invented in the 20% time.
